I just got home from Thunder Ridge Outfitters where I was filming Larry Crawford from XWT on a Muzzle hunt. The weather did not cooperate and we did not get her done right off the bat. We decided to bow out for a few days until the winds subsides a bit, them wham, we'll let em have it.
It's been a long time since the last Field Blog. So with no more delay, here we go. Since the last posting, Hundreds of turkey have died, several bear, a handful of deer, and a few legs of the Red Neck Slam.
Deer are on their feet and are moving pretty well. The big boys are not really showing their faces yet, unless you just get lucky and happen to be there close by their beds. Things are starting to heat up though. More reports are coming in each day of nice deer getting taken. In the next week it should be full bore, go-time. I've been behind the video camera the past week videoing Steve, and I must say that videoing the right guy is just as much fun as hunting myself. Give it a try, you'll love it. Here's a few success photos from lately.
I guess all of our other pro-staffers are crippled up from Lime Disease or other ailments! So I'll post again.
I can't say enough about the Illusion Games Calls - Glass Pot Call. http://www.illusionsystems.com/products/turkey-systems/2/
We have wacked more gobblers this season with that call than any other, hands down!!!
They can't help themselves when they hear it.
Just got off the phone 1 minute ago with Jeff Krizzly Adams and he smoked a big gobbler in NE this morning on video. I can't wait to see the footage of that bird struttin in the snow. My trigger finger is getting very itchy.
The weather sucks. Work sucks. I wish it was October!!! I'm holed up here in my office editing video like there's no tomorrow. Just pray for turkey season to come quick. Stay warm and keep yer witts!
Went out tonight to finish off my season with a doe hunt. Snuck up on a herd of 25 does, crosshairs steady, Snap-silence. Missfire, you have be F@$'n kidding. The deer stared for 5 minutes, then went back to feeding. I popped in another primer and waited for her to get sideways, Snap-silence. What the F#$%, the same thing. To make a long story shorter, I shot 4 primers at this big doe and the gun never fired. Then I found another primer in my pocket and shot one more at another doe walking out. This time the primer hit then the gun went off, kind of. More like a roman candle, you know the first shot that flops out about 10 feet and doesn't impress anyone, especially a doe that is 200 yards away. A little fire ball flew out my barrel and landed 5 feet in front of me. The agony, the irony, the laughter. I'm just glad it wasn't a buck that I flubbed on.
I'm about to throw in the towel. The deer have given me the beat down this late season Muzz. So far I've been out about 17 times and have only shot 1 small antlerless. I've got about 1 more hunt in me before I go mental. Wish me luck, wish the deer a fast painless death.
It's hit or miss this time of year. We've either been in the middle of a deer parade, or not seen a thing. Came close on 2 different bucks that were very nice. Shot a small doe last hunt, we could have shot 15 more if we had the tags, they were everywhere! It's a game of patience now, who has the most, and who has warmest boots! Go get'm
Monday marks the beginning of late season muzzleloader and I couldn't be more excited. Get out there and make some smoke. Just a few tips if your filming late season. A tripod or camera arm is ideal when filming a gun hunt. It doesn't matter how hard you try, you're going to jump when that gun goes off, so don't chance it. Buy yourself some boot warmer. The ones that go in the toe of your boots with the adhesive backing on them. Take one out of the package and shake it up. Stick it on the back of your camera battery. This will save your battery in cold condition by about 25%. Throw the other one in your glove or pocket to stay warm.
It's time to hang up the bow and grab that ol' smoke pole. Looks like we're going to have good conditions for the late muzzle loader season this year. Let's ice the cake fellas. We have one hell of a dvd already laid down, let's finish strong. I would love to put your face on the cover of the next DVD, give me a reason. Remember, get great field photos and call me if you have any questions. You can't kill em' from the couch!!
